STAR TREK: ANTHOLOGY
CHAPTER ONE
"Paranoia of Deception"
by
Thad Edwards
* * *
"Captain's log, Stardate 42354.4 Starfleet has contacted me on
subspace, informing me that I have been denied the Antaeus because of her
age. However, I have been given the USS Macathur, the namesake of its class.
Although she is not as large as the Antaeus, she is much faster and more
powerful. The date of commission of the Macarthur is 13 February 2365, or
Stardate 42355.1."
* * *
Captain Leonard Renney sat back in his chair. He started to drift
asleep, but was interrupted by the intercom.
"Commander Walker to Captain Renney." The call from his First
Officer broke Renney's silence.
"What is it Commander Walker?"
"The Macarthur has just arrived, sir. Cargo transport will begin
shortly."
"Thank you, Commander," Renney answered, "have my things sent to
Cargo Bay 1."
"Aye sir. Walker out."
Renney stood up and straightened his uniform. He went over to the
replicator. "Water, 55 degrees," As the glass materialized, Renney got a
chime from the door.
"Come in." The twin doors separated to let Commander Jeffrey Walker
into the room.
"I've just come to secure cargo transporter links to your...
belongings." Commander Walker was a tall man, a little over six-foot-five.
He had broad shoulders and a large commanding trunk, which made his head
look smaller than normal. He also had a suspiciously *wide* neck. "Walker to
cargo bay one, begin transport of cargo from quarters 330-55-81." Soon after
the end of Walker's sentence, Captain Renney's cargo was gone. Commander
Walker started to leave, but was struck by an afterthought. "Captain, you
can board ship now."
"Thank you, Commander. It will be a pleasure serving with you,"
Renney said.
Without actually making eye contact with Renney, he replied, "As
will serving under you, sir," as he turned and left the room.
As Commander Walker exited his quarters, a chill ran down Captain
Renney's spine and he shook it off. "Damned nerves," he explained to
himself, even though he didn't have a nerve problem.
Captain Renney took one last, good look around the room he may soon
forget. After taking the eptiness in, he left his quarters and headed to the
USS Macarthur dock to prepare for its commissioning in less than eight
hours.
The untouched glass of water dematerialized as Renney secured the
quarters.
* * *
"Captain on the bridge!"
With these words, the entire bridge crew snapped to attention.
"At ease," Captain Renney said as he stepped through the portal that
led out into the Deck 1 lobby.
The Macarthur bridge was of a new design, which departed from the
usual circular structure that Starfleet used. The Macarthur bridge was
slightly square, rounded at the back wall. The front wall of the bridge
contained the usual Starfleet issue viewscreen which was flanked by twin
portals. The side walls were mirror reflections of each other, for the most
part blank, with a nondedicated workstation in the center of each. The back
wall contained five departmental workstations and six windows which provided
a beautiful view of the aft portion of the ship.
The bridge layout, in turn, was also different. The captain's chair
was flanked by conn and ops, while behind the captain, on a raised level,
was Tactical, flanked by the first officer and counselor.
"Commander Walker," Renney began, "is the entire bridge crew
present?"
"Aye sir," the commander replied. "At Tactical is Security Chief Lt.
Scott Briggs, at Ops, Lt. Baeden Buckner, at conn, Lt. Maury Rosenfield, and
our couselor is Lt. Commander Emma Shaddox."
"Captain, incoming transmission," reported Lt. Briggs.
"On screen, Lieutenant."
As the crew turned towards the viewscreen, it flickered and
displayed the image of a man in his late fifties which Renney recognized
instantly.
"Admiral King," greeted Renney, "It's nice to see you again. Are you
the commissioning officer?"
"Yes, I am, Leo. I have evaluated your officers and, may I say, you
have a very dedicated crew on your ship." He paused. "By the powers vested
in me, in representation of the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet,
I officially commission this starship the USS Macarthur, NCC-2241. Good luck
with your ship, Captain Renney, I wish you many happy voyages and
prosperity."
As Commander Walker listened to this presentation, he wondered
whether the Admiral was covering up for him, or whether he really didn't
know at all.

STAR TREK: ANTHOLOGY
CHAPTER TWO
"The Ambassador"
by
Thad Edwards
* * *
As the Macarthur pulled out of dock, It was watched by hundreds of
civilians, Starfleet personnel, and fleet draftsmen.
The Macarthur was the first of the Macarthur class, commissioned
just minutes earlier. It was modeled after the Nebula and Galaxy classes.
It had the saucer and nacelle configuration of the Nebula class, and the
interconnecting hull and Secondary hull of the Galaxy class.
* * *
"Captain's log, Stardate 42366.8 The Macarthur is one day out of
space dock and we are now en route to our first mission. The Macarthur has
been sent to Starbase 297, where awaits Vulcan ambassador Soval. The
ambassador is scheduled to mediate a peace treaty between the Mullini and
the Federation. ETA at Starbase 297 is four hours."
* * *
The bridge of the Macarthur was quiet as Captain Renney was in his
Ready Room recording his log. There was a Sciences ensign at an aft
workstation testing external sensors for future missions. As he worked, he
recorded a 97.5% accuracy difference between the main deflector and ventral
saucer sensors. That can be detected and repaired in a level 2 disgnostic,
he thought to himself, making a mental note of it. For clearance of a level
2 diagnostic, he needed verification from the Chief Sciences Officer.
"Commander Denison, I have found a ninety-seven point five percent
margin of accuracy between the main deflector and ventral saucer arrays. A
level two diagnostic should clear up the problem."
"That sounds about right, ensign. Get on it."
"Aye sir."
Those were the only words heard on the bridge those few seconds. The
ensign felt a bit paranoid when he got back to work. He wondered just how
loud he sounded.
* * *
"Let the inertia bring us in, Lieutenant."
The Macarthur had just arrived at Starbase 297 and had just cleared
the `barn doors' when Ambassador Soval requested immediate transport oboard.
The ambassador had been pre-cleared by the starbase commander, so Captain
Renney couldn't go to him and stop the transport.
"Ambassador, we have to, uh, come to a full stop before a docked
transport can be achieved," stalled Renney.
"I will wait for only five of your minutes before transporting," the
ambassador replied, logically noticing what Renney was trying to do, "that
is as long as I will be stalled." Captain Renney blushed.
* * *
As the Macarthur left the starbase, Captain Renney took time out to
meet the Vulcan ambassador. He paused before initiating the door chime.
"Enter," came the reply.
As the portal opened, Renney saw the Vulcan for the first time.
Soval was a bit short for a Vulcan. Renney thought, how would they say it in
old Earth terms? Vertically challenged, he remembered. The Vulcan appeared
to be around 130 years old, give or take twenty years. It still baffled
Renney to how Vulcans could live so long.
"Hello, ambassador," Renney greeted.
"It is good to meet the son of a close friend," Soval answered.
Renney was startled. "You knew my father?" he asked.
Soval answered, "I knew him well."
* * *
"He knew my father."
"Captain, I don't understand what you're getting at."
After his initial meeting with Soval and finding out he knew his
father, Captain Renney scheduled a meeting with Counelor Shaddox.
"You see, counselor, my father was the c.o. of the USS Jamerin,"
Renney started, but mumbled to himself, "NCC-141."
The counselor could hardly hear the tail part of Renney's sentence,
but she knew what he said anyway; she was Betaziod.
"Tell me more about your father Leonard," Counselor Shaddox said.
"Well, he was captain of the Jamerin when it was lost in the Crudean
War, in late 2345. My mother and I were on Earth when we got the news in a
standard Starfleet data transmission. For some reason, I didn't believe it.
I kept thinking about it for a year or two later, but gave up all hope after
he never came back home. I haven't thought about it at all since I was
fifteen years old."
"And Ambassador Soval brought this memory back into the light?"
"Yes."
* * *
"Computer, send a flagged message to Ambassador Soval. ETA at treaty
location is two and one half hours. Renney out."
* * *
As the command crew stood in transporter room 3, Ambassador Soval
still hadn't arrived
"Chief," began Commander Walker, "are you sure he's on his way?"
"Aye, sir. As much as I know. Would you like me to send him another
comm message?"
"No, that won't be appropriate," interrupted Captain Renney, "I'm
sure he's just on his way." No one spoke for at least five minutes after
Captain Renney. The ambassador still was not there.
Counselor Shaddox spoke. "Maybe I should go the ambassador's
quarters and check up on him." Renney agreed.
* * *
Counselor Shaddox arrived at the ambassador's quarters and rang the
door chime. No one anwered. "Computer, override guest quarters 09-2306." The
doors slid open. Counselor Shaddox peered in. "Oh, my god. Security to
Ambassador Soval's quarters!"

CHAPTER THREE
"Deception and Retrieval"
by
Thad Edwards
* * *
"My apoligies, Gul Datek," spoke the shadowy figure, "someone has
already gotten to the ambasasador."
"What do you mean!" yelled the angry Cardassian over the comm link.
"I mean, the ambassador was found dead minutes before I was going to
kill him. I was in the transporter room when it happened."
"You must come back."
"What? I-I-I can't. The suspicion would be too great."
"Don't worry," said Datek, "I'll send someone for you." The message
ended as the familiar Starfleet emblem flashed onto the screen. The figure
stood up and straightened out his uniform.
"Send him quick," he said to himself, "I don't think I can go through
any more of this."
* * *
In Sickbay, Doctor Alysis Jenolan performed the usual autopsy on the
ambassador as Captain Renney stood by.
"Captain," the doctor began, "the ambassador lost a lot of blood out
of this laceration." She pointed to a jagged tear in the Vulcan's abdomen.
"It appears to have been put there by the Cardassian dra-tek blade."
"Dra-tek balde? What's that?" asked the captain.
"Well," answered Jenolan, "I've only seen one once, but I've never
forgotten how it looked. The main shape of it is simliar to the Arabian
scimitar, only that the inside curvature bears jagged projections. It's a
very lethal and painful weapon--"
"As demonstrated on the ambassador here," Renney interrupted, "but
that brings up another question; why would a Cardassian weapon be on a
Federation starship?"
* * *
Back on the bridge, Commander Walker sat quietly while the Macarthur
warped through the Phalen system. There was total silence until the Tactical
station beeped.
"Commander," began Security Chief Briggs, "Sensors are picking up a
vessel. Configuration... unknown."
"Open a channel, Lieutenant." Lt. Briggs attempted communications,
but the vessel was too far away.
"The vessel is not within communications range, Commander."
"Walker to Captain Renney, we have picked up an alien vessel, but are
not able to open communications; suggested plan of action?"
"I'll be right there," said Captain Renney.
* * *
By the time Renney arrived on the bridge, The vessel had been
identified as a Cardassian Liburnian warship.
"Are we in communications range yet?" inquired the captain.
"We are sir," began Briggs, "but the Cardassians are jamming
communications."
"Full stop. Shields up, red ale--" The ship was rocked by two shots
from the Cardassian vessel. Lt. Briggs attempted to get shields up but the
ship was hit again before his finger hit the button.
"Captain, damage to forward starboard RCS port thruster. Reccomend
evacuation of deck 10, sections four through six."
"Yes, go ahead, Lieutenant. Fire a full phaser spread at the
Cardassian vessel." Four photon torpedoes rocketed out of the forward
torpedo tube to strike the Cardassian ship's forward section. Before the
embers from the debris burned out, two Cardassian soldiers transported onto
the bridge of the Macarthur.
"Come with us, Mordet, or should I say, Commander Walker," one of the
soldiers said before grabbing Walker and disappearing in a shimmer of
Cardassian transporter energy.
"Lieutenant Briggs, get a lock on Commander Walker and transport him
back." Lt. Briggs attempted to lock on to Walker's signal, but before he
could verify transport, the Cardassian ship warped away, back to Cardassian
space.
"Did you get him, Lieutenant?" the captain asked.
"No sir, they left too soon," the Security chief answered, "he's
trapped on the ship."
* * *
"Well, Mordet, you sure managed to frakk this mission up."
"Look, Gul Datek, someone got my dra-tek and killed the ambassador
before I could. Was there someone else in on this?" The gul waited to
answer.
"Actually, there was. He has been in this a lot longer than yourself.
You may know him. He transported onto your ship just after it was
commissioned. He's been hiding out ever since. He transported off when we
got you. Come in, Garel, or should I say, Admiral King." Mordet snapped his
head towards the door as it swished open and Garel walked in, in full
Cardassian uniform. "Garel, I thought you were dead. I heard you died over
twenty years ago!"
"And so did most of the rest of Cardassia. It was a ploy to join and
infiltrate Starfleet, much like your own. However, I was never tricked at my
own game, that is where you made the mistake that cost you your life."
Mordet did not understand. "What do you mean?" he asked.
"Exactly what I said," replied Garel, as he raised a Cardassian
phaser to Mordet. "You stupid frakk."
Mordet was dead when he hit the floor.

CHAPTER FOUR
"Announcement"
by
Thad Edwards
* * *
The Macarthur crew was still a bit shaken by the sudden abduction of
Commander Walker. They weren't, however, scheduled for a mission to get him
back from the Cardassians.
"I can't believe that a Cardassian spy could ever get this far into
Starfleet," said Commodore Iansky, "I just hope that somehow, the
information was lost before he was able to tell whatever it was."
"I'm still a little shook up about the disappearance of Admiral
King," replied Captain Remmey.
"Yes, we all are," replied the Commodore.
"Well, Commodore, I'd better be going back on duty. Remmey out."
Remmey's ready room terminal flickered for a moment before going black.
* * *
"Captain's log, Stardate 42373.7 The sudden taking of the false
Commander Walker has shaken the crew of the Macarthur, but we must not
forget our new duties; namely, to name another First Officer. I will be
looking over crew records as soon as possible."
* * *
"Counselor, meet me in my ready room after contacting crew member
Commander William Signer," said Captain Renney as he left the bridge.
"Aye sir," obeyed Counselor Shaddox.
* * *
William Signer reached into the replicator. "Here, you go, honey.
Pickles and chocolate." He grimaced.
"Thank you, dear," said his pregnant wife, Inez. Just then, they
were interrupted by a comm message.
"Counselor to Commander William Signer, you are to report to the
Captain's ready room immediately. Shaddox out."
"Well," started William, "I wonder what that was about."
"Maybe it's a promotion," guessed his wife.
"Well, I'd better be off," said Commander Signer as he left.
* * *
"You wanted to see me, captain?"
"Yes, come in, Commander." Signer walked across the room and took a
chair in front of Renney's desk. "You are aware of the loss of Commander
Walker?"
"Ah, yes, I am, captain," replied Signer, a bit uneasily.
"Well," Renney paused, "Though we are all hurt by the loss, we must
not ignore our duties. In the shadow of this situation, I am... happy to
promote you to the status of first officer of the Macarthur." Signer was
awestruck.
"F-First Officer?" Signer started to smile. "First Officer... of the
Macarthur? Thank you, sir!" Renney smiled and stood up.
"You are dismissed. Report to the observation lounge on this deck at
0800 hours tomorrow. You will now be on the Alpha shift." Renney stood up
and shook Signer's hand. Renney watched Signer as he left the room,
apparently on Cloud Nine.
"Well," said Counselor Shaddox, "he sure took the news well."
* * *
"Honey, honey? Where are you honey?" Signer searched for his wife as
he entered their quarters. He thought he heard panting coming from the
bedroom. "You in here honey?"
"Yes," came the tired reply, from behind the bed.
"Where are you-- HONEY!" Signer's eyes flew wide open. "Commander
Signer to Sickbay, I need some help in my quarters. My wife's delivering!"

CHAPTER FIVE
"Samaritan's Wakening"
by
Thad Edwards
* * *
"You need to breathe," said the young Medical ensign as Inez Signer
went into her contractions.
"Honey, you'll be alright," said Commander Signer as he attempted to
calm his wife. Signer tried to go with his wife all the way to Sickbay, but
Doctor Jenolan stopped him.
"Commander, she'll be alright," said Jenolan, "trust me."
* * *
"It's a boy!"
Inez Signer cried and smiled as Ensign Parner held up her child so
she could see it before it was put into the nursery. "It's so beautiful,"
she commented.
* * *
"Captain's personal log, Stardate 42379.5 Our new First Officer now
has a new family member, Alexander Gregory Signer. He was born just eight
hours ago. I haven't been down to see the child, but I will go soon."
* * *
"Congratulations, Commander," said Captain Leonard Renney as First
Officer Signer entered the bridge.
"Thank you, Captain." Signer took his seat. "Well, what is our
mission?"
"We are scheduled to transport relief supplies to Trelta III,"
explained Lt. Briggs.
"Apparently," started Renney, "there is mass famine on the planet. We
picked up surplus food and temporary shelter when we were at Starbase 297."
"Conn," asked Commander Signer, "what is our ETA?"
"Two point five days at current warp."
* * *
"Captain's log, Stardate 42405.0 The Macarthur has arrived at Trelta
III and are scheduled to begin cargo transport in two hours. Commander
Signer is in charge of the operation, which is, oficially, his first mission
as First Officer. Communications have already been established with Lemac
Drul, a Treltan ambassador, representing the planet."
* * *
As Lemac Drul praised Captain Remmey for delivering the supplies,
Commander Signer stood in cargo bay four, overseeing the safe transport of
supplies down to the planet's surface.
"Commander, this crate has no designation," informed Ensign Chaney.
Commander Signer thought. "Ah... send it to coordinates 0650-2218-
7521." Crates that had no designation were sent directly to the surplus
stores on Trelta III.
"Aye sir."
* * *
"How was that for your first mission, Commander?" asked Captain
Renney.
"Well, it actually went very well," Signer said, "I'm really looking
forward to this new position."
* * *
"It was pure hell."
"Come on, Bill," said Inez Signer, "It'll get better, just wait and
see." A baby's cry came from the next room. "Let me go check up on Alex."
As Commander Signer swallowed another spoonful of chicken soup, he
thought of tomorrow's duty agenda. Minutes later, Inez came out of Alex's
bedroom. "The baby's alseep," she said.
"As well I should be," commented Commander Signer as he put the bowl
onto the replicator platform. "G'night dear." He kissed his wife and retired
to bed.
* * *
"Captain's log, Stardate 42401.7 The Macarthur was scheduled to
rendezvous with the USS Enterprise for a survey mission in the Udran System,
but the Enterprise was called away on a distress call in Sector 73710. The
Macarthur is instead ordered to rendezvous with the SS Vico."
* * *
"Energize."
Commander Signer and his Away team disappeared in a haze of
transporter energy as Captain Charles Barrow, commanding officer of the SS
Vico, appeared.
"Hello, Leonard," greeted Capotain Barrow, as he stepped off of the
transporter platform.
"Hello, Chuck," said Renney as he stepped forward to shake his old
friend's hand.
* * *
"And he hasn't been seen since?"
"No, the Admiral disappeared just after commissioning this very
vessel," said Renney. He drained his glass of the remaining Suarian brandy.
Barrow sighed. "What a loss. He was a great man."
* * *
"Begin iritium scan."
As the scan started, Macarthur Sciences Chief Denison read the
results of the triteron scan just conducted. Something was wrong. Triteron
traces hadn't been this high since the Nausicaan War of 2342.
"Sciences Chief Denison to Captain Renney. We've got trouble."

CHAPTER SIX
"Trapped"
by Thad Edwards
* * *
Chief Denison began talking as soon as Captian Renney entered the
science lab.
"Captain, triteron traces are high, very high." Captain Renney was
dumbfounded.
"Which signifies..."
"Which signifies there have been Nausicaan ships firing repeadedly
in this area. Triteron is a major detonation agent in Nausicaan weaponry,"
Denison explained.
"But why does this matter," Renney asked, "the Federation hasn't
been at war with the Nausicaans in over twenty years."
"Captain," Denison pleaded, "this matters because this area is a
major Federation trade route."
* * *
"Captain's log, Stardate 42403.9 Sciences Chief Denison has found
large traces of the substance triteron, a product of the weapons used by the
Nausicaans. I have requested the starship Blavatsky to patrol our current
scanning area. The Blavatsky will serve to protect the Macarthur and the
Vico during the survey."
* * *
As Captain Komer entered the bridge of the Blavatsky, Operations
Chief Cryne informed him of the request from the Macarthur.
"How far away are we?" asked Captain Komer.
"Approximately one point six light years, sir."
"What is our ETA at warp four?"
"Five point seventy-five days at warp four," Lt. Commander Cryne
said.
"Engage."
* * *
"Captain's log, Stardate 42421.2 The Blavatsky has arrived in this
system. It will be on constant patrol until the end of our survey.
Hopefully, the warship will scare away any potential attackers."
* * *
The warship Blavatsky was an impressive vessel. It was almost the
size of a Galaxy class ship, around 623 meters in length. It shared many of
the characteristics of the Galaxy class vessel. It used the same saucer
section as the Galaxy class, but the connecting interhull was much shorter.
The warp nacelles were the same as the Excelsior class, tucked up under the
saucer. The ship itself had a sleek, menacing shape and feel to it.
The Blavatsky belonged to the Andreaht class of vessel. The first of
the class (the Andreaht) had been commissioned just five months earlier. The
Blavatsky was the third to be commissioned.
* * *
"Current status."
"All systems operating a peak efficiency, major sensors including
main deflector currently in use," reported Lt. Briggs. On the Macarthur,
everything was as to be expected. Captain Renney radioed over to Commander
Signer, who was on the Vico.
"Commander, how much work is there to be done in this mission?"
"Are you that eager to get out of this sector, captain?" Signer
joked.
"No, Commander," Renney smiled, but soon became serious. "It's just
that I don't want to be around if the Nausicaans decide to keep 'testing'
their weapons."
"I see," said Commander Signer, "I don't think it will take more
than, uh... one more day at the most."
* * *
"Captain's log, Stardate 42423.9 The survey will conclude in a few
hours. Most of the Macarthur's science personnel has already beamed back and
the Vico's personnel are back on their ship. Lt. Commander Denison and
Commander Signer remain on the Vico."
* * *
On the Macarthur bridge, everything was as usual. Many of the
personnel were in the middle getting back into their usual schedule when
Counselor Shaddox stood up.
"Captain, I sense hostility. It is very far away, but there is such
a large number of beings I can feel it from here. I think it may be the
Nausicaans."
"Counselor, are you sure?" asked Captain Renney.
"Yes, very sure."
"Lieutenant Briggs, contact Commanders Denison and Signer. They are
ordered to beam back as soon as possible."
"Aye, sir."
"Blavatsky, come in," demanded Captain Renney.
"This is the Blavatsky," said the voice over the comm speaker. "We
have picked up Nausicaan ships on our long range sensors. Recommend
starships Macarthur and Vico raise shields immediately. Repeat, raise
shields immediately. Blavatsky out." Captain Renney turned to Briggs.
"Lieutenant, have Denison and Signer beam over immediately." Briggs
attempted, but failed.
"Cannot comply, sir. The Vico has already raised shields. They do
not plan to lower them."

CHAPTER SEVEN
by

* * *
As the Nausicaan ships neared, conditions became tense aboard the
Macarthur. The Vico had raised shields, trapping Macarthur crew members
Commander William Signer and Lt. Commander Anthony Denison on the vessel.
"Captain," began Lt. Briggs, "Nausicaan ships within visual range."
"On screen."
* * *
"Lieutenant Briggs, open a channel with the Nausicaan ships," said
Captain Renney.
"Aye sir."
"Nausicaan ships, this Captain Leonard Renney of the Fed-" He was
rudely interrupted by the Nausicaan captain.
"We know who you are," sneered the Nausicaan, "we have ways of
intercepting your transmissions." Captain Renney shifted his weight to his
other foot.
"Nausicaan captain," Renney began, "I have no interrest in the fact
that your have found ways to intercept our communications. Instead, I would
like to know why you have been firing your weapons in this area."
"Federation Captain, I am, how would you say, appaled. You well know
that this is established Nausicaan space. You have no jurisdiction here."
"Nausicaan captain-"
"Call me Makoqq."
"Makoqq, this area sits in the middle of a Federation trade route
established over nine years ago."
"Federation captain-"
"Call me Renney," Renney corrected.
"Captain Renney, I think you should check your starmaps again."
* * *
"There is something definately wrong."
In his ready room, Captain Renney spoke to Captains Barrow and Komer
via comm link. They simultaneously studied charts of the current sector.
"You said it," agreed Renney. The star charts assured the sector was
indeed Nausicaan space. Someone had previously tempered with the charts.
* * *
Back on the Macarthur bridge, Captain Renney spoke with Commandant
Makoqq.
"I'm very sorry, commandant," said Renney, "it appears someone has
tampered with out charts, superimposing the Gheric sector with your space. I
apologize on behalf of the United Federation of Planets." Makoqq sneered at
Captain Renney.
"Federation fool, prepare to die."
* * *
"Captain's log, Stardate 42425.5 After attempting to settle
situations with the Nausicaans, they fired on the Vico, severly damaging the
ship. The Vico was able to retreat to saftey. The Macarthur was able to
destroy the vessel apparently containing Commandant Makoqq. The Blavatsky,
however, was destroyed by the other Nausicaan vessel."
* * *
"Energize."
As Commander Signer and Lt. Commander Denison transported off of the
Vico, Captain Renney filed the loss of the Blavatsky. Soon after, Commander
Signer walked into Renney's ready room.
"Captain," Walker said, "Will the Macarthur be investigating the
Nausicaan encounter?"
"No, Commander," Renney mumbled, "Richard Komer was... a very, very
close friend of mine." As Renney stared into the empty space of above his
desk terminal, the Macarthur warped off to its next destination.

CHAPTER EIGHT
"Murder Mission"
by
Thad Edwards
* * *
As the USS Dalton slid through space, the light from nearby stars
glistened off its hull. The warp nacelles of the Miranda class starship
glowed bright blue. The main deflector dish was blackened, scarred from
battle.
* * *
In his ready room, Captain Batanides prepared for arrival at Starbase 262. The
Dalton was scheduled for replacement of the main deflector. It had been almost
completely destroyed in an altercation with the Ganelans.
"Batanides to bridge, what is our ETA at Starbase?"
"Two point two hours, sir."
* * *
"Dalton log, Stardate 43627.7 Docking at Starbase 262 is over.
Myself, along with many other of the crew of the Dalton, will take an
extended shore leave on starbase while the deflector dish is repaired."
* * *
Two boys ran through the Promenade of Starbase 262, almost knocking
down Dalton crew member Lieutenant Hugh Kinney. He stepped aside to keep
from falling down. Just then, phaser fire shot through the Promenade, only
inches above Kinney's head. Women screamed. Kinney ducked as the phaser
almost hit him square in the neck. As he hit the deck, he turned to see
where the shots were coming from, just in time to catch a beam right above
the bridge of his nose. His life flashed before his eyes.
* * *
"Captain, incoming message from Starbase 262.
"On screen." The bridge viewscreen of the Macarthur flickered and an
image of a weary Starfleet Admiral came into focus. "Admiral, what can I
help you with?" Captain Renney asked.
"Captain, there has been a serious tragedy on this starbase. An
officer from the USS Dalton was killed on the promenade. Since you are the
closest ship to the starbase, you have been called to protect the base in
case of a possible invasion. A data transmission is being sent containing
further information about the situation. Corva out." Captain Renney turned
to Lt. Briggs.
"Data transmission recieved, sir. Would you like to view it in your
ready room?" Lt. Briggs asked.
"Yes, lieutenant."
* * *
Captain Renney turned his viewer off. He got up and headed to his
personal replicator unit. "Hot choclate," he ordered. As the mug
materialized, a call came over the comm system.
"Captain, arrival at Starbase 262 in one half hour."
"Thank you, mister Briggs," Renney said, as he sat down in his chair. "I plan
to beam over to the starbase right after docking."
"Aye sir."
* * *
"Begin transport," Admiral Corva said to the transporter chief.
Captain Renney materialized on the pad. "Nice to meet you, Admiral
Corva," Renney said as he extended his hand.
"And you also," said Corva, "It's just too bad it's under these
conditions. This way to the Ops center," Corva said as he headed out of the
transporter room, Renney on his tails.
As they walked toward the Operations control center, Captain Renney
stifled a cough so as not to disturd the admiral; this was the first time
he'd ever met an Andorian. He'd heard they were self-described as violent,
but he didn't want to find out first hand. A short turbolift ride and they
were at Ops.
* * *
As Captain Renney walked into Ops, he looked out the large windows.
He saw the Macarthur and the Dalton. The Dalton's repairs were long over,
but the ship was a long way from being on its way to its next mission.
"Admiral, look at this," called an ensign at the Security post. Corva walked
over to the station. His eyes widened.
"Security fields to Deck 221, section 17," Corva turned to Captain
Renney, "I think we've found the murder weapon, and the killer."

CHAPTER NINE
"Demise of the Giant"
by
Thad Edwards
* * *
Security teams ran down the corridors of Starbase 262. Civilians and
other non-Security personnel were ducking out of the way of the rushing
officers. "All civilians, clear out!" yelled Lieutenant Mutra. He lead
Security team four, "red alert situation in progress! I repeat, red alert!"
People looked around in horror as the Security teams passed.
The team boarded the turbolift and decended to deck 221. On arrival,
they found the deck already empty.
"Section seventeen," Lt. Mutra ordered his officers. He could see
another security team walking down the corridor. "Follow them," he added.
* * *
"Plasma inducers to full power."
"Check."
"Protophase cloak."
"Check."
"Arrival at Federation Starbase 262?"
"One hour."
* * *
The Security teams stood in Classroom 221-17-03. The murderer sat in
the middle of the room, waiting. He slowly stood.
"You humans are pitiful," he said, "you care more about the life of
one of your comrades than of the spread of your cause. You will learn not to
be so, so, feeble-minded." Lt. Mutra leered at him.
"When is that," Mutra asked. The murderer grinned and looked up at
Mutra with hungry, devilish eyes.
"Soon," he said, "soon."
* * *
"Renney out. What could that mean," Renney asked Admiral Corva.
"I don't know, Captain," said Corva. He walked around Ops and
thought. "But I'm not sure I want to find out."
"Admiral," said Operations Chief Hamble, "Incoming vessels, unknown
configuration."
"Approximate distance," asked Corva. Hamble checked her display
panel.
"Two light years, sir. At the vessels' current speed, arrival is in
fifteen minutes."
* * *
"They are here," said the murderer.
"Who," asked Mutra, "Who is here?" The murderer did not answer.
* * *
"Shields up!"
"Aye sir," said Hamble as she secured the starbase's defense systems. Capt.
Renney walked around behind Hamble. He called up visual sensors. The Ops
viewscreen flickered and showed four vessels, small, but intimidating.
The vessels were approximately the size of the Oberth class starship. The
ships were in the shapes of flattened teardrops, tapering to a powerful engine
at the rear of the vessel. A ridge ran along the front of the ship, serving as
a weapons pallet.
Renney stared at the ships. Something didn't seen right. It worried
him. "What is the proximity of the vessels to the station," he asked. Hamble
looked at her panel.
"Approximately six hundred meters," she answered.
"Six hundred meters!" Renney knew something was wrong this time. At
the size of their vessels and the distance from the station, An attack from
them would be almost laughable.
"Receiving hail," said Lt. Commander Hamble.
"Federation station, I am Centurion M'Nai, of the Siladi vessel,
Y'var."
"What is your mission here," asked Admiral Corva.
"I am here to collect one of my crew members," M'Nai said, "I believe he is
here." Admiral Corva stepped closer to the viewscreen.
"I'm sorry Centurion M'Nai," Corva started, "but your crew member is
charged with the murder of one of my crew members. I'm afraid he must be
detained here."
"I don't think so, human," M'Nai said. Corva and Renney stood in
silence while M'Nai walked around his command center. M'Nai turned towards
his viewscreen. "I'll give you this, human," M'Nai offered, "I want my crew
member back in five of your minutes."
"I'm sorry, Centurion," replied Corva, "but I will have to keep your
crew member."
"Very well," sneered M'Nai, "I will have to use force." M'Nai turned
to one of his officers. "End transmission."
* * *
"Captain's log, Stardate 43640.8 The Macarthur is on its way to
planet Dina III, seventeen light years away. The USS Dalton is also en
route. Starbase 262 has been destroyed. Loss of almost all hands. Of the
five hundred lifeboats launched, forty-five percent were destroyed in the
battle. Almost four hundred were killed on lifeboats alone."

CHAPTER TEN
"Breakthrough"
by
Thad Edwards
* * *
Captain Renney sat in his ready room. He swiveled in his chair so
that he could see out the window. As the Macarthur slid through the inky
darkness of space, Capt. Renney though about the events of four months past;
The murder of Lt. Hugh Kinney and the destruction of Starbase 262. He
thought about it too much. Way too much.
"Captain," a voice said. It was Commander Signer. "You're still in
your ready room? I thought your shift was over almost an hour ago."
"It was, Commander," said Capt. Renney, "I just haven't been able to
tear myself away from... all this uh, paperwork."
"Yes, sir. Signer out."
Renney leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.
* * *
"I'm worried about him, Commander," said Counselor Shaddox.
Signer nodded. "So am I. He hasn't been the same after Starbase 262."
Signer walked towards the viewscreen. "I'm going to Ten Forward."
* * *
"What'll it be, commander?"
"Just gimme a synthehol," Commander Signer mumbled.
"Sure."
As the bartender placed the glass on the bar before him, Commander
Signer took a long look around the room. There was Lt. Adams having dinner
with a female companion. A young couple was holding hands and standing at
the large windows, looking out into the stars. Signer left the bar and went
to a small table in the corner.
Signer sat down and traded the glass between his hands. He raised
the glass to his mouth and bottomed up. He lowered the glass to the table
and left.
* * *
"Captain's log, Stardate 43968.8 It has been four months since the
complete destruction of Starbase 262. It still amazes me how--what the
hell?"
A doorway of light appeared in the middle of the room and someone
stepped out.
* * *
"It was an experiment, in time travel."
"I can see that," said Capt. Renney, "but why here?"
"Well, actually, I didn't chose to come here, this was just where
the channels sent me."
"The channels?" Commander Signer asked.
"Yes, the channels."
"I don't understand," said Briggs, "you somehow tap into these
channels and they send you through time?"
"In short, yes."
"But how?" asked Sciences Chief Denison.
"I'll need to set up a portal."
* * *
"Captain's log, Stardate 43968.9 The Macarthur has aquired a strange
guest. He claims his name is Jeremy Wright. Mr. Wright claims to be a time
traveler. In the benefit of the doubt, we have given Mr. Wright the
opportunity to construct a... time portal. In the event anything goes wrong,
I assume full responsibility."
* * *
Captain Renney walked through the corridors of deck 12. He walked
around looking for section 35, comparment 3.
"Section 30... section 31... section 32," Capt. Renney counted as he
went towards the site of Jeremy Wright's portal.
"Ah, section thirty-five." Capt. Renney walked down the cross-
corridor and turned left. Security officers stood on either side of the door
leading into comparment 3. Renney nodded as he strode past them.
When Renney got inside the room, he saw representatives of every
deparment on the ship, attempting to design experiments based on successful
time travel. Renney wove through the mass of personnel, nearing Wright.
"Captain!" Wright called towards Renney, "over here!"
Renney stopped, contemplating leaving, but continued on his way
towards Wright.
"Mr. Wright, I did not give permission for any extensive
experimentation of this project, so I am forced to-"
"I understand, Captain," Wright interrupted. He turned from Renney
and faced the crowd of people. "Excuse me!" he started, "but your captain
has informed me that he has not cleared any study of this situation! I'm
sorry, but you're going to have to leave!"
The people nodded and began to dismantle their instruments. Shortly,
the room was empty except for Wright and Renney.
"Thank you," Renney said. Wright took a step towards the captain.
"Captain," he began, "how would you like to be my first guest in the
wonderful world of time-travel?"
"Your offer sounds very inviting, but I couldn't."
"Why?"
"Duties, scedules."
"Captain."
"What?"
"Come on." Wright took Renney into another room in the compartment
and pointed towards an empty door frame.
"What is it?" Renney asked.
"The portal," Wright said.
"That's the portal?" Renney said incredulously. Wright nodded.
"What's on the other side?"
"Time," Wright said, "time is on the other side."

CHAPTER ELEVEN
"The Journey Begins"
by
Thad Edwards
* * *
Captain Renney stared at the doorway and looked into the next room.
There was a chest of drawers, Federation standard, moved about a meter
and a half away from the door frame. On top of it was an ornate stand,
flat, and with three finger like projections. On the stand was a red stone,
about the size of a Red Delicious apple, shaped like an egg. The stone
had a glimmer, faint, but still visible.
"What does that do?" asked Renney.
"It is a token," said Wright, "a token into the channels."
Capt. Renney stepped closer to the doorway. He heard a faint hum. A
whine really, kind of like a phaser.
"Are you ready?"
"Wha-" Renney jerked around. He hadn't even noticed that Wright was
in the room. He hadn't noticed that he was even in the room. The portal
had a power. A strange, mystical, dangerous power.
"I said, are you ready? To go."
"I don't know," Renney said. He quickly left the room.
Wright smiled. He knew Renney would be back. Soon.
* * *
"I'm going back."
"Captain, what do you mean?"
"Counselor, I feel that the destruction of Starbase 262 was not a
fair fight. I believe that the Siladi vessels were not what they appeared
to be."
"Captain," Counselor Shaddox said, "I sympathize with you, but that
battle was over four months ago." Capt. Renney stood and walked closer to
Shaddox.
"Counselor, I expect to go back, and find out what the Siladi
vessels were really capable of, and if possible, even out the fight."
"Captain-"
"That is all, counselor!" Renney roared back. "You are dismissed."
"But Cap-"
"You are dismissed, Counselor!"
* * *
Counselor Shaddox sat down in her chair on the bridge. She sat
silently for at least ten whole minutes.
"Is there anything bothering you, Em?" Commander Signer whispered
over to her.
"No, Will, nothing." A tear fell from her eye.
"What is it?" Signer asked again. Shaddox hesitated.
"It's the captain," she said.
"He's still worried about Starbase 262?" Signer asked.
"I could only wish," Shaddox said. "Excuse me." She left the bridge.
* * *
Captain Renney absently walked the corridors on deck 12. He circled
the deck three times, each time slowing at compartment 3 of section 35.
But he didn't stop. He just kept walking. On the fourth time, he stopped.
* * *
Counselor Shaddox rang the chime at Commander Signer's quarters.
"Come on Will."
"Enter," came the tired voice from inside. The door slid open and
Shaddox walked in. "What can I do for you Counselor?"
"I'm sorry to wake you, I hope I didn't disturb the baby," Shaddox
said, her words full of worry.
"That's okay Em, what is it?"
"Captain Renney," she said, "he's not in his quarters."
"He's probably in Ten-Forward or a holodeck," Signer said.
"He's not. He's on deck twelve. Section thirty-five."
Signer felt sick. "You go ahead," he said, "I'll slip into something
and catch up with you."
* * *
"Mister Wright, I'm ready."
* * *
When Renney stepped into the portal, he immediately felt a rushing
feeling. He felt himself rushing forward, not in time, but actually in
space. He looked around. He was in a tube, a passage, a tunnel of some
sort. A channel. Outside of the tube, Renney could see other channels,
thousands of them, some parallel to this one, some perpendicular, all at
odd angles.
How do you like it? he could hear Wright say. But he didn't really
hear it, he felt it. Like it was his own thought.
It's wonderful. Great, Renney thought back. He tried to move his
mouth, but couldn't. Why can't I talk? he thought.
Because you don't have to, Wright thought back.
* * *
Commander Signer, Counselor Shaddox, and a small Security team
arrived at the door to Wright's quarters. Commander Signer rang the chime.
"Enter."
The door slid open. Jeremy Wright stood in the room, with Capt.
Renney. Commander Signer stepped towards Renney.
"What happened?" Signer asked.
Renney looked into Signer's eyes. "I did it, I stopped them."
"Who?" Signer asked, "you stopped who?" Renney smiled. He let out a
small laugh and collapsed in a heap on the floor.
* * *
Will I ever get back to the ship, Renney asked.
Of course, Wright thought, in time. You'll get back. Renney looked
behind him. He could see Wright, appearing to fly. Far, far behind them
Renney could see the beginning of the channel, terminating in the red stone.
* * *
The stone sat in its stand, on the chest of drawers. Rays of light,
energy, and power lashed out at the doorway which served as the travel
portal. Suddenly, the portal blinked out and the rays swirled back into the
stone, enveloping it in energy. Beams of light shot out of the stone and
immediately disappeared, taking the stone with them.

STAR TREK: ANTHOLOGY
CHAPTER TWELVE
"Reunion"
by
Thad Edwards
* * *
The USS Jamerin streaked through the Emila Sytem. The light from
the star made the nacelles of the Ambassador-class starship shine. The ship
was being sent to Ruthal IV to defend a Federation colony from an attack.
* * *
Captain Ian Renney paced on the bridge.
"What is our ETA at Ruthal IV?" he asked.
"Twelve point seven hours, sir," came a reply from behind him.
"Increase to warp six," Renney said.
"Aye sir."
Ian Renney couldn't wait to get to the Ruthal system. The Jamerin
had been pulled away from fighting in the ongoing Crudean War. The Ruthal
colony was unarmed, and if the Jamerin didn't get there soon enough, the
colony might not be there when they arrived.
"Captain," Security chief Tanh said, "there's a temporal
disturbance on deck twenty-one. Should I-" Tanh looked back at his display
panel. "Never mind, captain; it's gone. I guess it was just a sensor
glitch."
"Well inform me if you get any more `sensor glitches,'" said
Captain Renney. He turned his back to Tanh and grinned.
* * *
Leonard Renney and Jeremy Wright stepped out of the terminus onto
deck twenty-one of the USS Jamerin. The terminus blinked out behind them.
Renney adjusted his eyes to the darkness of the room. As he made out some
details, he began to realize they had landed in the officer's quarters of
a Federation starship. Which ship and what time, he didn't know. Wright
was the first to break the silence.
"Where are we?"
"I'm not sure what ship we're on," Renney began, "but these are
Federation officer's quarters." Renney walked around in the darkness. He
looked out a window. "The ship appears to be travelling at warp speed."
"I wonder how far back we travelled," said Wright.
"Computer," said Renney, "what ship are we on?"
The computer responded, "You are aboard the Federation starship,
USS Jamerin, NCC-141."
* * *
Leonard Renney stepped out of the quarters with Wright behind him.
They wore replicated uniforms appropriate to the period.
"Mister Wright," Renney said, "I know we have not travelled back
far enough, but we must stay here for a while. My father is the commanding
officer on this ship. This is his last mission."
"What happened?" asked Wright.
"I don't know. The ship was lost lost somehow. We may be a few
hours away from the Crudean war; I think." Wright knew what Leonard was
getting to.
"You want to see your father?"
"Yes."
"Make it quick, we have to get back to the appropriate time and
get back to your ship."
* * *
Ian Renney left the bridge and rode the turbolift down to meet his
first officer, Commander Dunn, in conference room 17. Commander Dunn was
overseeing the evacuation of the colonists upon arrival at Ruthal IV.
Commander Dunn was finishing hos work when Capt. Renney walked into the
room.
"Comander Dunn, I see you are almost finished."
"Yes captain," Dunn said as he picked up a nearby padd, "I have
secured emergency quarters and medical supplies and personnel for the
colonists."
"How many colonists are there, commander?"
Dunn fingered his padd. "Almost two hundred, sir."
"Almost?" Renney asked.
"One hundred eighty-seven," Dunn corrected, "sir." Captain Renney
nodded and left. As the door swished behind him he bumped into a crew
member, almost knocking him over.
"Dad?" the man mumbled.
"Lieutenant?" Renney said."Can I help you with something?"
Loenard Renney stared into his father's green eyes. "No," he said.
"No sir."
"Back to your post, then," the captain said, "I'm sure you're aware
of the mission we are undertaking."
"Aye sir."
Jeremy Wright watched this from across the corridor.
* * *
"That was my father," Renney said as he and Wright entered to room
in they landed earlier.
"I could tell that," Wright said.
"This is his last day alive. Today is the day he died." Wright
turned back to Renney.
"I think it's time we left."

STAR TREK: ANTHOLOGY
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
"Turning Point"
by
Thad Edwards
* * *
The sun was high over the campus of Starfleet Academy, in San
Francisco. Cadets walked from building to building, in between class and
on the way to lunch, socializing.
Behind the Stellar Sciences building, however, the scene was
different. A doorway opened in mid air and out stepped two men, dressed
in Starfleet uniforms.
"Captain Renney," one of them said, "where are we?"
Capt. Renney looked around, and started noticing some buildings.
"Mister Wright, I think we've traveled to Earth. We are on the San
Francisco campus of Starfleet Academy."
"Should we change our clothes?" Wright asked.
"I don't think so," Renney began, "I think this may be around when
I attended. Personnel wore the same uniforms."
Renney and Wright walked to the front of the building.
"Where can you get a bite to eat around here?" said Wright. Renney
stopped.
"I know just the place."
* * *
Renney and Wright boarded the air tram and set off to Starbase
Earheart.
"Excuse me," whispered Wright, "but why are we going to some
starbase just to eat?"
"I know this great place," Renney said, "It serves authentic earth
food. Real cooks and all." Renney could feel the tram leave the atmosphere.
A voice came over the loudspeaker.
"Arrival at Starbase Earheart in two minutes."
* * *
The docking procedure was quick and Renney led Wright to deck B on
Starbase Earheart. Only this time, something was wrong.
"What is it?" Wright asked, when Renney stopped in his tracks.
"Oldie's," he said, "Where is Oldie's?"
Renney looked in front of him. Where he was used to seeing the
restaurant he called Oldie's, was a rough bar, the Bonestall Recreation
Facility. He stood, speechless, as three cadets walked into the bar.
"What's wrong," Wright demanded, "What is it?"
"That's the Bonestall Recreation Facility," Renney said, "This must
be at least the year 2327."
"Why do you say that?"
"Bonestall was closed about 2327," Renney explained, "twelve years
before I came to the Academy."
"Why'd it close? It appears to have great business."
"Someone was stabbed. A Starfleet personnel, in fact. Cadet Jean-Luc
Picard; now in command of the Enterprise."
"So they closed it and opened something else called 'Oldie's,'"
"Precisely."
* * *
The next morning, Renney and Wright decided to leave. They searched
all around campus for an empty doorway. As they walked toward a doorway of
a maintenance shed, a messenger with a bouquet of flowers bumped into them.
"Excuse me," he said with a grin, "Do you know a John-Luck Pikerd?"
"No," Renney said and kept walking, before he realized who the
messenger was asking for.
* * *
Renney stepped through the portal. It opened right where Renney
wanted it to.
* * *
Renney stepped out of the portal into an unoccupied research
facility on Silad Prime.
"This is it," he said to Wright, "Now, we make it even."

CHAPTER FOURTEEN
"Odds Evened"
by
Thad Edwards
* * *
Renney walked across the room towards a display panel. The
panel was labeled "schematics."
"Schematics," Renney said under his breath. Wright walked around
the room, watching displays. Renney found his way through the newest plans
of the Siladi Alliance. "Here it is," he said. Wright rushed over to
Renney's side.
"What is it?" asked Wright, as he peered over Renney's shoulder.
"A cloaking device of some sort," Renney said. "It appears to
have the ability to hide the ship, but project a false image instead."
"Oh," Wright said.
Renney continued. "I also found a plan for a plasma frequency
weapon."
I don't even want to hear this, Wright thought.
"It appears that it is an ordinary plasma weapon. The thing that
makes it so significant is that it changes frequency; So it can travel
right through another ship's shielding." Renney paused. "Very impressive."
Wright cocked his head. "I hear something; footsteps." Wright
grabbed Renney by the arm and threw him behind a console stand. He hid
behind another.
Two Siladi walked into the room. One of them was about five inches
shorter than the other. They were dressed in officers' uniforms, so they
were members of the Siladi Alliance. The short one walked over to the
panel that Renney was hiding behind.
"Someone has already accessed the plans," he said. "P'Tok! It was
P'Tok! I knew he was spending too much time in here."
"What is it, K'Del?" the tall one asked.
"P'Tok has accessed the plans for the cloak and the weapon," he
said. "He knew they were confidential. Information like this cannot be
known by a common janitor."
"I'll arrange for his death," the tall one said, before he left.
K'Del closed the files. "Tor!" he cursed.
* * *
A short while after K'Del left the room, Renney crawled from
behind the console. "They're gone," he said, signaling for Wright to come
out. Wright crawled out of his hiding place covered in dust.
"Guess they don't pay P'Tok enough," he joked.
Renney smiled and went to work, reopening the schematic files.
"Get ready to set up the crystal, Mister Wright. One more second, and
we'll be on our way." Renney deleted the schematics, closed the files, and
followed Wright into the portal.
* * *
Why did you have to do that, Wright asked.
I had to, Renney said, It was my duty.
* * *
The portal opened on the planet Vulcan, where Renney and Wright
only had time to comment on the heat before setting off into the channels
again.
* * *
The fourth time the portal opened, when Renney stepped out of the
portal, he knew exactly where he was. He was tired. Fatigued. He only had
time to replicate and change into a uniform before the door chime rang.
"Enter," Renney said.
The door slid open. Commander Signer stood at the door. He stepped
towards Renney.
"What happened?" Signer asked.
Renney looked into Signer's eyes. "I did it, I stopped them."
"Who?" Signer asked, "you stopped who?" Renney smiled. He let out
a small laugh and collapsed in a heap on the floor.
* * *
"And he collapsed after you spoke to him?" Dr. Jenolan asked.
"Yes, doctor," Signer said. "Somehow I think this Jeremy Wright
character has something to do with it."
"I'll check the captain," she said.
* * *
Dr. Jenolan tapped her comm badge. "Commander Signer, this is
Doctor Jenolan."
"Yes doctor?"
"I've checked the captain. Nothing's really wrong with him, he's
just fatigued. However, I did notice that within the five minutes he's
been in Wright's quarters," she paused, "he's aged almost three days."
* * *
Commander Signer burst into Wrist's quarters.
"Mister Wright," he said, "I have something I'd like to speak with
you about."
"What is it Commander?"
"The captain," Signer said, "What happened to the captain?"
"Nothing, Commander," Wright said. He got up and walked towards
Signer. "He's okay, don't worry about him."
"Mister Wr-"
"He needs his sleep, he's been," he paused, "busy."
Commander Signer huffed and left the room.
Jeremy Wright walked over to a doorway. He set up the crystal.
"You're welcome," he said, before walking into the portal, and
disappearing, forever, from this time period.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN
"New Mission"
by
Thad Edwards
* * *
"Lieutenant Rosenfield, proceed to Starbase 262 at warp 4,"
Captain Renney said, with a smile. Commander Signer walked onto the
bridge. "You have the bridge, commander," said Capt. Renney as he left for
his ready room.
* * *
"Captain's log, Stardate 43971.5 The Macarthur is proceeding to
Starbase 262, Admiral Corva commanding. The Macarthur was at Starbase 262
four months ago for protection against the Gamelans. They never came."
* * *
"ETA at Starbase 262 is one hour, thirteen minutes, captain," said
Lieutenant Rosenfield.
"Commander," said Renney as he turned to First Officer Signer,
"has Admiral Corva sent any kind of mission information?"
"Negative, sir. I believe it may be a surprise mission."
* * *
Transporter Chief Cornell tapped his comm badge. "Admiral, Captain
Renney, of the Macarthur, is ready to beam over."
"Proceed."
"Aye sir, Cornell out."
Capt. Renney and Commander Signer appeared on the transporter pad.
"Welcome Captain; Commander. Admiral Corva would like to see you as
soon as possible," Cornell said.
* * *
Admiral Corva stood up as Renney and Signer entered the Executive
Conference room.
"Captain, commander," Corva greeted as he shook their hands.
Captain, I'm sure you're familiar with Ops officer Hamble, and Security
chief Bruno." Renney nodded as Corva introduced them. Corva motioned for
them to sit.
"Captain Renney," Corva began, "There has been an accident at the
mining colony on Hadril II."
"Hadril II," Renney said, "My sister is stationed there."
Corva lowered his eyes. "Some of the tunnels have collapsed due to
large amounts of geological stress. Two were killed in the accident."
"Who?" Renney asked.
Corva picked a PADD off of the table. "Lieutenant Jerrold Lake, and
Ensign Tamara Paine. So far, these have been the only casualties."
"What is our mission?" asked Captain Renney.
"To evacuate the inhabitants of the colony," Corva said. "The
colony had crew of thirty-one. Now, twenty-nine. Maybe less."
"There have been more cave-ins?" said Commander Signer.
"Since the accidents," piped in Lt. Hamble, "communications with
from the colony has been sketchy. We believe that during a cave-in
communications equipment may have been damaged. Severely."
"Captain," said Corva, "I recommend that the Macarthur leave
immediately."
* * *
"Captain's log, Stardate 43973.6 The Macarthur is eight hours away
from Hadril II, the site of a mining colony. All shipboard operations have
been halted until the completion of the evacuation. Operations chief Lt.
Buckner is in charge of the evacuation."
* * *
"Captain, we have arrived at Hadril II."
Renney stood up. "Scan for humanoid lifeforms."
"Unable to comply, sir," said Ensign Effol, "High levels of
disturbance in upper atmosphere. However," he added, "there seem to be a
number of windows."
"In the disturbance?" asked Renney.
"Yes sir. Recommend using them for transport."
"Thank you, ensign." Renney turned to Commander Signer.
"Commander, put together an Away team. Take transporter pattern enhancers.
Now."
